The first time I saw the original Alien (1979) by Ridley Scott I was just a little boy being terrified at something bursting out of my chest, into the now iconic Xenomorph Alien. For the longest time I kept saying that the Original Alien had been one of my favorite films of all time, I even remember re-watching it with my dad one time and grabbing him while Dallas met his end. This lead to one of the fondest memories of having an honest reaction to a jump scare scene, which not many horror movies today can replicate.
Sigourney Weaver as the badass heroine added to the classic Hero vs. Villain theme which made the movie that more special. It makes me wonder how people reacted in the movie theaters when the film originally released in 1979. I would imagine it would have been somewhere a long the lines of Jaws, where your mind is messing with you more than what is actually happening on screen.
Then there was Jones, one of the only survivors of the movie… and he was a cat. This movie made cat’s cool before everyone starting loving neko’s, and it’s probably safe to say that Ripley was one of the first OG cat ladies.
Now when I reminisce about Alien I think about how there are very few original horror or science fiction movies coming out, because Hollywood keeps pumping out remakes, sequels, prequels, reboots, yada…yada… yada… It seems that T.V. or streaming websites are taking more risk when it comes to original and new ideas. But as Ridley Scott takes the helm again for Alien: Covenant, one can only hope that it can be more original instead of another bad prequel.
Do you have a fond memory of watching Alien? Do you remember why you fell in love with the first Alien?
